Circular porcelain edging

For the installation of this porcelain edge we used 900x600mm tiles which we then cut down to strips of 630x150mm. The circle started life as an icosagon (20 sided polygon) so the next step was to cut the ends of each strip at a 9 degree angle. (360degrees/20/2 = 9).

Once these were laid the final part was to put a pin in our centre point and mark two circles onto the tiles ready for cutting in situ.

This was a particularly complex and enjoyable project to take on.

The design has be altered slightly as we've progressed on this project. Notably the design of the wall which will free up more patio space.

Vertical sleeper installation advice:

  • As opposed to concreting the sleepers in the ground which will lead to premature rotting and is also not strong enough to retain the soil anyway. We decided to install a concrete block wall and screw the sleepers to it. These screws are  hidden with a countersink and plug cutting kit. Weep holes were cored out after.
  • To prevent the sleepers for splaying out at the top where they are not attached to the wall we chose to install a 1metre threaded bar running through the sides of the sleepers meaning the sleepers are clamped together in sections of 5. Again this is completely invisible.
